How to Install System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012

In this post, I will cover set up Virtual Machine Manager Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012R2 step by step. Here is an outline of what we will do:

Environmental Prerequisites for SVMM Server 2012

  1. Active Directory Services
  2. DNS
  3. SQL Server 2012 SP1

Virtual Machine Manager Server 2012 Prerequisites

  • Open PowerShell as an Administrator and run the following cmdlet:Import-Module ServerManager

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework-Core,Web-Static-Content,Web-Default-Doc,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Filtering,Web-Stat-Compression,Web-Mgmt-Console,Web-Metabase,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Windows-Auth -Restart –Source D:\sources\sxs

  • Note: If you deploy SQL Server on another machine, you will need to install SQL Client Native and SQL command Line Utilities on VMM machine

Installing Virtual Machine Manager 2012

  1. Run the exe from the SCVMM installation media and click Install.

  1. After the wizard launches select all features check boxes and click Next.

  1. Enter organizational <Lab> or product key details

  1. Accept License Agreement, select customer improvement program and Microsoft Update options

  1. Check installation location <c:\program files\Microsoft System Center\Virtual Machine Manager>

  1. Database Configuration
    Specify the SQL Server<VMM.Lab.local>to be used for the SCVMM databases.

  1. Configure Service Account and key management <Lab\VMMAdmin>

  1. Leave as default or change ports as necessary, defaults shown here.

  1. Library Configuration as Below

  1. Check Summary and hit Install.

  1. Press close to launch the console

  1. Click close to open the SCVMM connection screen then click connects.
